NECRWA 2017 Follow-up!

*ahem*

*sweeps away the dust bunnies and cobwebs*

So...hi! It's apparently been quite a while since I last said something new. And, well, that's probably because I don't have any new publishing news, per se, but things are going...yes, well, they're going. And I've been busy and have lots of ideas simmering.

And I had the great good fortune of attending this year's New England Chapter - RWA Conference

Not only did I get to attend NECRWA2017, but I also had the wonderful opportunity to present a session with the amazing Alyssa Cole on "Writing Historicals Outside of the Regency." She also recently released a new historical romance set in Civil-War America, called An Extraordinary Union. It's the first in a series, and it's a must read!

The thing is...we'd both planned to have handouts for participants...and things didn't quite work out. So we announced that we'd post materials on our web sites. If you're interested, you can find a PDF of our session on my Resources for Writers page.

I'm also going to post a list of author recommendations for some of my favorite examples of historical romance authors who handle unusual settings and characters well--with deftness, nuance, and beauty. I think, during our session, I mentioned Jeannie Lin and Beverly Jenkins in particular, but there are so many more!

I had a wonderful, WONDERFUL time at NECRWA2017! Kudos to all the organizers and the varied, talented, thoughtful presenters! (If you follow me on Twitter, you might also have caught a glimpse of me participating in one of the evening festivities--a Hamilton: the Musical singalong!)

Are there any historical romances with unusual settings or unusual characters that you would highly recommend? If so, post them in the Comments section, and I'll add them to my list (with credit to you, of course, even if I thought of them too)!
